Can Your Cell Phone Prove You’re Insured?

October 16, 2013|

We've all seen those movie or TV scenes where someone gets pulled over by police, and is asked for their license and registration. When the scenario plays out in real life, they usually ask for proof of insurance too, especially if there's been an accident. The frazzled driver reaches into their glove compartment and pulls out an old shoelace, instructions on how to work the airbag, and possibly a rubber chicken along with their insurance policy. All this hassle has led many to point out that it could all be so much easier if you could use an electronic device to show proof of your coverage. Although it isn't common practice across the United States, California has recently joined several other states that will accept electronic proof of insurance, which could make digging in that glove box a thing of the past. Another way to make the whole process of [Continue Reading]

Headed back to college?

September 6, 2013|

Make sure your valuable property is adequately covered.  Typically, if you are living on campus in dorms, your parent’s policy may provide coverage in the event of a theft or fire.  If you are living off campus in an apartment you will need to purchase a separate Renters Insurance policy for your property. The landlord’s insurance policy provides insurance for the apartment or home you will be renting, but your personal property is not included in the landlord’s policy.  Statistics show college students’ belongings are at a higher risk for theft.  If you have a roommate, their renters insurance will not cover your personal items. A standard Renters Insurance provides protection against loss of personal possessions, liability for accidents you are held responsible, and additional living expenses if you need to live somewhere else while the building is being repaired or replaced due to a covered loss.  If someone falls [Continue Reading]

A Brief History of the Start of Labor Day

August 30, 2013|

The late 1800’s were contentious times between big companies and the emerging labor unions. Individual states began enacting Labor Day on the first Monday of September to recognize workers and their unions. After a particularly bloody strike against the Pullman Company, Grover Cleveland made the holiday a national one in 1894 to help ease tensions between the sides. It was mainly a political move that apparently didn’t work as Cleveland wasn’t re-elected. Since then however, as a country, we celebrate the American worker every year at this time. The number of workers that are unionized has dropped from over 50% in the 1950’s to less than 12% in 2012. The holiday now serves more as a family and friends social occasion to recognize the end of summer. At Wraith, Scarlett & Randolph Insurance, we recognize the efforts of the American worker. No matter how you decide to recognize the holiday, [Continue Reading]

August 28, 2013|

Recreational boating can be an exhilarating pastime. It is great way to spend time with the family, soak in the summer sun, do fishing and generally be close to nature. If you are headed out to the lake this summer, do not let worries about boat insurance spoil the fun. Regardless of whether your boat is docked or on the water, you need to have watercraft craft insurance to protect you against any losses stemming from damage to the boat or injuries resulting from its use. Insurance policies are available from all major insurance carriers for most kind of personal watercraft (PWC) and recreational boats. Typically, insurance companies offer policies for personal use boats that are up to 26 feet long and $250,0000 in value. Though many homeowners’ insurance policies do provide some coverage for boats, they are typically inadequate and do not always cover boating injuries or certain accidents [Continue Reading]

Review your motorcycle before going on that summer cruise!

August 16, 2013|

The summer means taking your motorcycle out of the garage and onto the road. With the heat and nothing but the open road ahead of you, it is tempting to simply turn your bike on and start riding. However, before you head out with you friends, there are a few tips to keep you safe when you go cruising. First and foremost, make sure that you obtain, if you haven’t already, motorcycle insurance. Oftentimes, insurance for bikes is reduced or dropped during the colder months. Ensure you have proper coverage before riding. Conduct a pre-ride inspection that includes checking the kickstand, chassis and chain, oils and fluids, lights accessories, controls, and tires. Over or under-inflated tires can mean poor stability and handling, so check your tire pressure. Make sure the shifter, front and rear brakes, clutch, and throttle are all working properly. Check all switches and electrical equipment, turn signals, [Continue Reading]

Insurance Specially Designed for Farms and Companies in Agricultural and Related Businesses

August 7, 2013|

Farm and agricultural insurance is specifically designed to cover unique situations for those engaged in farming and related agri-businesses. While liability insurance for farms and agri-business is similar to most commercial general liability policies, the perils it protects against are a bit different. The following areas of loss need evaluation with your agri-business insurance representative. Appropriate coverage should become part of your business’s insurance portfolio. Loss of Income Most businesses see fire as a major incident that could shut a business down for a time. Part of their insurance portfolio is a loss of income protection. Basically, the insurance company provides income to the business until it starts up again. Agri-business needs more protection as storms, freezes, and disease can all shut an agri-business down for a season. Check with your insurance agent about this important coverage. Agritainment Insurance Small family farms may offer hayrides to visitors. Have you considered [Continue Reading]
